International collaboration in health research.

چکیده
There has been much interest in international collaboration in health research, especially when projects involve scientists from developed and developing countries. It is most valuable to replace suppositions, assumptions and anecdotal accounts that often feature in these discussions with well-researched objective data such as that presented by Swingler et al. in this issue (pp. 511–517). The most successful examples of international research collaboration confer clear benefits to both contracting parties, and eventually to scientific progress in general. In an ideal case, the partnership produces a smooth dovetailing of skills and expertise. The partner from the developed country contributes expertise as well as sophisticated laboratory and other special resources that are not available in the less developed institution. Their peers in the developing country provide local clinical and other contextual knowledge. Contributions in kind from the host institution in the developing country complement the financial donation from the developed country partner. While recognizing the potential value of such collaborative projects, there is justifiable concern about attendant risks and dangers. Because of the unequal power, there is the danger that the more powerful partners from the developed country could exploit the vulnerability of the developing country scientists and institutions: perhaps by focusing research on priority interests of the sponsoring foreign institutions rather than on the urgent needs of the host country. The study by Swingler et al. indicates that a high proportion of collaborative projects researched important health problems in the region and that foreign sponsorship did not significantly divert scientists in African countries from their priority health problems, though the paper raises some concerns. The small number of projects

متن کاملCollaboration and Co-Production of Knowledge in Healthcare: Opportunities and Challenges
Over time there has been a shift, at least in the rhetoric, from a pipeline conceptualisation of knowledge implementation, to one that recognises the potential of more collaboration, co-productive approaches to knowledge production and use. In this editorial, which is grounded in our research and collective experience, we highlight both the potential and challenge with collaboration and co-prod...
متن کاملNeeded: Global Collaboration for Comparative Research on Cities and Health
Over half of the world’s population lives in cities and United Nations (UN) demographers project an increase of 2.5 billion more urban dwellers by 2050. Yet there is too little systematic comparative research on the practice of urban health policy and management (HPAM), particularly in the megacities of middle-income and developing nations. We make a case for creating a global database on citie...
متن کاملCollaboration Between Researchers and Knowledge Users in Health Technology Assessment: A Qualitative Exploratory Study
Background Collaboration between researchers and knowledge users is increasingly promoted because it could enhance more evidence-based decision-making and practice. These complex relationships differ in form, in the particular goals they are trying to achieve, and in whom they bring together. Although much is understood about why partnerships form, relatively little is known about how collabora...
متن کاملBeyond “Two Cultures”: Guidance for Establishing Effective Researcher/Health System Partnerships
Background The current literature proposing criteria and guidelines for collaborative health system research often fails to differentiate between: (a) various types of partnerships, (b) collaborations formed for the specific purpose of developing a research proposal and those based on long-standing relationships, (c) researcher vs. decision-maker initiatives, and (d) the underlying drivers for ...
